SAMMI,WHO CAN DETACH HIS BODY PARTS
by Rein Maychaelson

19min | Indonesia | 2025

He was born with the extraordinary ability to detach and reattach his body parts at will.
Throughout his life, he generously shared these unique gifts with the people he loved.
But when he passed away, all that remained was
a solitary torso topped by a faceless head.
Now, his mother embarks on a haunting quest to reclaim the pieces of her son, seeking to mend not just his body, but the very bond they once shared.

Director's Statement
Throughout our lives, we encounter many people who enter and leave. Some come as lessons, some as blessings, and a few stay, growing with us.
The character in this story was born from my own recollections of growing up. We are a mosaic of those who came in our life.
Growing up is a strange process. We learn so much, yet, at the same time, we numb parts of ourselves.
Take, for instance, the first heartbreak. It feels as though we’ve given someone our first hope for love, and once it’s lost, we wonder if we’ll ever feel that way again.
Then, we meet more people in different chapters of our lives—some betray us, others hurt us—and, bit by bit,
we begin to give away pieces of ourselves.
This piece is an exploration of the self, a challenge to the idea of identity. What makes us who we are? Is something taken from us—by hardship, pain, trauma? If our body were split in two, which half is "us"? Or are we both halves? And when we die, do we bury the physical self, or is it the idea of who we were that truly defines us?
