Director's Statement Stolen Memories is a high intensity drama about sexual boundaries, loss of innocence, and the fragility of memory. Based on a personal experience, I wanted to explore how we project ideas onto the naked body, sexuality, and the shame that surrounds these themes, particularly within families. These ideas are constantly evolving, creating rifts between generations as one generation’s healthy attitude towards a naked body can become transgressive, disgusting or even assault for the next generation. The film also examines how unreliable memory can be. How it’s shaped by our emotions and the perspectives of others, and how we reconstruct memories to fit a narrative, influencing the way we see ourselves and others. It addresses today’s tendency to over-analyze past experiences and relationships, where trauma at times even becomes currency. The story and visual language focuses on Emil’s psychological struggle as a disturbing thought begins to take root in his mind, causing him to question the love and innocence in his relationship with his mother. This idea spirals out of control, leading to irreversible damage to their releationship. While primarily a psychological drama, the film incorporates thriller elements to enhance the tension, creating an unsettling atmosphere that amplifies the emotional stakes. I hope the film resonates emotionally while keeping the audience on edge. Creating an experience that feels like a vivid, haunting memory, leaving them with a lingering sense of unease and prompting them to reflect and discuss what they've seen.
