Director’s Statement How do you mourn someone who is still alive? This question lies at the heart of Ultraviolet. Although the loss is just as profound, there is no final goodbye. Instead, there is this entirely new situation to be dealt with indefinitely. In Ultraviolet, Mathilde is forced to redefine her relationship with her mother, just as she is trying to navigate her own path as a young woman. I was interested to explore how this notion of grief and girlhood could go hand in hand, and how the one could influence and inform the other.
